Monthly update for March 2024 by the Ontario Living Wage Network
A group photo of 15 local living wage organizers

We just held our first in-person network meeting since early 2018. We had local living wage organizers from Niagara, Toronto, Hamilton, Guelph, Peel, and Eastern Ontario in the same room at long last.

Our network is administered by two full-time staff (Anne on the left, me down right), but we rely on the energy of our local organizers to help us reach new employers, assist with the annual calculations, and fulfill media requests.

After all the introductions, catch-ups, and note sharing, we discussed the future of the living wage movement. We're confident that the number of employers will continue to grow, and that more Ontario communities will join our ranks.

Thank you to our host Rose Butler (centre right with red lanyard) and United Way Greater Toronto!

Thousands of Canadians will get raises next week. What to know about the federal minimum wage increase

March 25, 2024

As with most articles covering any increase in a minimum wage, our living wages are mentioned.

While there are many unionized workers in federally regulated sectors where this increase from $16.65 to $17.30 is take effect, many more are not. The change will affect some 30,000 workers in the federally regulated private sector, the government said in a statement.

Jokey certifies as living wage employer
February 29, 2024

Plastics manufacturing firm Jokey North America Inc. in Goderich recognized as latest certified living wage employer in the region.

President Paul McInnis is quoted “Each and every person here deserves a safe and supportive work environment, as well as the financial means to provide for themselves and their families. We are proud to be a certified living wage employer and we challenge all businesses in Huron Perth to do everything they can to provide a living wage for their employees."

Featured Employer

Each month we’ll showcase a different living wage employer. This month it’s Kingston's Weller Pharmacy, a champion in the living wage movement for over 5 years.

Owner Tarek Hussein was one of the first employers to join our formal certification program back in February of 2020, right before the pandemic hit.

"At Weller Pharmacy, our pharmacists and staff are dedicated, caring, and provide top-quality and non-judgemental customer service to our partners and clients. We take our mission statement and core values seriously—they drive everything that we do," Tarek adds via the website.

Sortable Employer List

We are now making a searchable, downloadable list of currently certified employers available on our website:

www.ontariolivingwage.ca/employerlist

Just like our employer directory, you can search by keyword, sector, or name. But now you can also sort or search by city, making it easy to find a list of all certified employers in your area.
