Monthly update for July 2023 by the Ontario Living Wage Network

It's February, and this is the time of year when we see a bump in renewal notices. It was this time when we got our status as a non-profit, and when we began to collect annual fees from employers for the first time in 2020.

In 2024 we're now coming up on almost 1,000 living wage certified workplaces in Ontario, with more added every week!

We're thankful to all our certified employers; both those new to the network, and those who were with us in the early days as a nascent organization.

TORONTO STAR: Canadian CEO pay for 2022 broke records. Here's what their yearly salary could buy you

We are getting mentioned in many stories related to compensation now, including this one about CEO pay:

"If, as a generous CEO, they decided to pay at Toronto’s livable wage, which Ontario’s Living Wage Network calculated at $25.05 an hour, they could afford 594,810 hours of labour, or close to 68 years’ worth."

THE VARSITY: CUPE 3261 calls for wage increases amid Toronto cost-of-living crisis
Jan 28, 2024

"The majority of its 350 food service members earn $22.58 per hour, below the $25.05 Toronto Living Wage."

We are always pleased to see our living wage calculations being put to use in union negotiations, as they are here for University of Toronto food service employees and caretakers. Their pay was suppressed by the controversial – and now repealed – Bill 124 which limited annual public sector wage increases to one per cent annually.

Featured Employer

Each month we’ll showcase a different living wage employer. This month it’s Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce, which has represented the Parry Sound Area business community since 1897.

"We feel that everyone deserves to make a living wage these days as the cost of living is constantly on the rise. In order for businesses to remain an attractive prospect for employees, we feel having a living wage certification gives them leverage over competitors that may not," says Chris McDonald, Executive Director.

We now list 5 local chambers of commerce in Ontario. They are powerful leaders in the living wage movement as they encourage their member businesses to become certified.
